Acceptable Use Policy for Sir John Franklin School

Computer Access

PC workstations, iMacs and MacBooks are available in the computer labs and throughout the school. Students may also connect to the Wi-Fi network through their personal devices. Computer and network access requires teacher permission
and supervision. Individual teachers also have expectations regarding the use of technology in their classroom.

Access privileges to the Sir John Franklin School computer network are dependent on the level of responsibility shown by individual students. The following acts and prohibited sites constitute inappropriate use, may endanger students, and possibly damage the network, hardware, and/or software.

Prohibited Acts Include

• Texting or the use of a cellular phone during instructional time
• Use of someone else's CBE account or network access
• Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
• Use of obscene language
• Harassing, insulting or attacking another person or their reputation
• Trespassing in others peoples folders, work or files
• Intentionally accessing, posting, sending or downloading inappropriate material
• Assuming the identity of another person to gain information
• Viewing web pages through a proxy server
• Running an application/program from a USB
• Moving or damaging hardware or computer accessories
• Any attempt to threaten or harm a person
• Plagiarism of online content
• Posting, publishing, or distributing personal information about oneself or others without the supervision and consent of a staff member
• Sharing of usernames and passwords

Prohibited Sites Include

• Vulgar or lewd depictions of the human body
• Any content publicly labelled for adults
• Violent acts
• Online gambling
• Social networking sites (i.e. Facebook)
• Sites encouraging the use of illicit or illegal drugs, tobacco or alcohol
• Sites advocating violence or hatred against an identifiable group. i.e. race, religion, gender, disabilities, age, colour or sexual orientation
• Sites promoting criminal activity
• Sites that permit the downloading of copyrighted material or unlicensed software

Violation of CBE or School Policies

The teacher is ultimately the manager and supervisor of electronic resources in the classroom and will determine their use. Each violation is dealt with individually.

Breach of this policy may result in:

• Restriction or loss of computer privileges
• Confiscation of personal electronic devices by a teacher or school administration
• School based disciplinary consequences
• Police intervention and/or legal action

Confiscated personal devices, including cell phones, will be held in the office. The electronic device will only be returned after contact with the parent or guardian.
