A reminder that students are welcome to attend home games to cheer on their fellow firebirds, however students may only attend away games with their parent/guardian (one parent cannot supervise multiple students who are not their dependents. This was specified in the Junior High Athletics information for all CBE schools). Thank you for your cooperation with this.
Breakfast Program…coming soon!
Huge thanks to those families who have reached out to support our desire to start a breakfast program at SJF. We will continue to reply to those of you who have offered assistance in the coming weeks, as we don’t want to 'bite off more than we can chew' as we get this up and running! To start…we are looking for some volunteers who can pick up donations from a place in Forest Lawn (about 6 minutes from the school) every Friday at 2pm, and some volunteers to set-up/supervise/tidy-up the cafeteria each morning (8:30-9:30). If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here!
Off-Campus at Lunch
The businesses at the corner of 19th St. and 8th Ave (7-eleven, Subway, Family Foods, etc) have voiced some concerns regarding the behaviour of students at lunch. Unfortunately, some of the behaviour has resulted in one of the businesses feeling the need to close their store to students at lunch, and others have felt the need to call the police, due to other customers feeling unsafe or uncomfortable approaching the stores. The reputation of our school and our students in our community is important to us. I have requested pictures/videos of any students behaving in a way that is not appropriate, in order to address this at school. Additionally, I ask that you please have a conversation with your child(ren) about this:
- Grade 5/6 students are required to remain on school property, where there is supervision, throughout the entire lunch.
 - It is important that students know they are held to the expectations of the “Student Code of Conduct”, regardless of where they are. This includes transportation to and from school, as well as while off-campus at lunch.
 - If they are not personally purchasing food, students should not go down there. We have a huge property with lots of seating! Having 100 or more students ‘hanging out’ in front of the plaza does not always result in the best decision making!
 - Students in Grades 7-9 who do access the businesses are reminded that they are to remain on the sidewalk at all times. (All alley-ways are off limits, both on the way to/from the store, and those behind the complex). Nothing good happens in back alleys…
 - Finally, a reminder that slurpees, energy drinks, and any open beverages are not allowed in school. Students will be asked to throw them out as they enter the building. In addition to the potential mess they cause, focusing on school in the afternoon is hard enough - let’s not make it worse by filling their brains and bodies with large amounts of sugar and caffeine!

Again, we want to be seen as good citizens in our community. Thank you for your help communicating this!
Bathroom Vandalism
Sigh. Although we are an Arts-Centered Learning school, I would really prefer that students use their artistic skills and creativity in a less destructive way. The wasted hours that go into cleaning up graffiti or wet toilet paper thrown on ceilings, and the enormous waste of resources like entire rolls of toilet paper or packages of paper towels used to overflow toilets would be much better spent on Artists in Residence and art supplies! Please encourage your child to SAY SOMETHING if they SEE SOMETHING. This can be as simple as an anonymous note left with their teacher or the office. All vandalism will result in the bathroom being closed until it can be dealt with.
Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.

Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians

CBE educators believe that parents and guardians can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors – in order to do so, they need the right tools and information.
Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success. The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics.
Thank you for your time and consideration to join us.
